Doubtful Sound
Doubtful Sound is one of New Zealand’s most breath taking attractions. A world like no other, this magnificent scenery was used in the filming of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Doubtful Sound is one of Fiordland’s most beautiful fiords, incorrectly named, as a sound is made by a river and a fiord by a glacier. Doubtful Sound was first named Doubtful Harbour, by James Cook, Master of the Royal Navy Ship the Endeavour in 1770, as he was doubtful the ship would get in and out again due to the wind. We lived in Doubtful Sound for several years and we feel that it is one of the most beautiful places in New Zealand. It is a place of many moods – most wonderful and we are happy to share our local knowledge of the area.
Milford Sound
The Road to Milford, a spectacular alpine road, is one of the most scenic drives in New Zealand. You can spend a whole day exploring the different stops and short walks, as well as the longer walks if you enjoy walking in wilderness alpine country. We have a CD or cassette tape which you are welcome to borrow that explains the History and Highlights of the Road to Milford Sound. The Cottage Fiordland Homestay B&B is the perfect base for exploring Doubtful Sound and Milford Sound as well as several other local attractions including world famous walking trails such as the Kepler Track, Routeburn Track. There are also several short walks close by in Manapouri and Te Anau.
There are two excellent trips that we recommend taking to see the Majestic Sounds and we can prebook a trip for you which will save you 10% with Real Journeys. The other trip is Fiordland Adventure Kayak and Cruise both offer wonderful day trips which take over 8 hours. The Doubtful Sound departure boat is only a 2 min walk from your accommodation.
Doubtful Sound is home to two large pods of the wonderful Bottlenosed Dolphins who often enjoy playing and frolicking close by the cruise boats making for some great photos. Seal lay about on the shore line rocks sun baking and enjoying the tranquility of Doubtful Sound.
